Flash Review - 12/21/11

Avengers #20 – Yawn!  They’re really stretching out the Shattered Heroes concept too far much like they did with the Heroic Age arcs.  Additionally, between this title and New Avengers they are also stretching the Norman Osborn angle out too far.  I get that they are gearing up for something big involving him and both teams but they should build up to it a little slower and in one book at a time.  Best part of the book was Viper getting her hair back and losing that gross squid!  And I love how Osborn is so crazy that hes hilarious to himself (and the rest of us) at all times.

Fear Itself: The Fearless #5 – It’s really not over yet?  But we’re almost halfway there?  Thank god!  This series is getting worse and worse.  The big premise of this issue was Valkyrie confronting Thing for the hammer, and then he just gave it to her!  WTF!  Big letdown…  Another story that did NOT need a full issue to tell.  Marvel is basically just stringing us along until the next big event (which is granted a Phoenix story and therefore perfect for me but still).Again though, at least we’re almost halfway done with it.

New Mutants #35 – Not bad, getting a little drawn out also but not bad.  I’ve really enjoyed watching Nate Grey integrate into the team (which has gone much smoother then I would have expected).  And I truly hope that Blink says around.  It’s good that she has a place to land since her generation of students has all but disbanded and gone their separate ways.  Consider that the New Mutants are still together and the New X-men are all pretty much still around each other but Generation X has split to the winds with Husk in New York with Wolverine, Jubilee and Chamber with Cyclops and Emma, M with X-Factor and everyone else pretty much dead so it’s good that she has a place with the older group (which could be considered something of a promotion).

X-Factor #229 – BORED NOW!  I don’t know where the writers are going with this one but I’m not feeling it!  The Bloodbath story in general was a little bit of a disappointment to begin with and no I am just completely lost as to what is going on with Jaime.  My best guess is that when he “died” he went to some alternate dimension/timeline or something like that and he’s there while his whole team thinks he’s dead which leaves an opening for Havok and Polaris to come back next issue and take over again.  Just my best guess.  As for the entire scene that Jaime is watching unfold, (including a living Banshee and Rahne’s forsaken child) I don’t know what I really think…  I do wonder how and when they will wrap this up since it seems like Wolverine shows up next issue (with Alex and Lorna in tow presumably).  Only time will tell, let’s just hope it’s not too much time.

Hellfire Comes Calling - Review Generation Hope #14

This is going to be a bit of a short review this time guys because, to be truthful, nothing really struck me too strongly this week (for good or bad).  So I picked the issue that I felt like the most happened…this one!  For what it’s worth, a lot went down for the Lights in this issue, I guess I wasn’t thrilled because typically the storytelling in this book is a bit underwhelming…  Sorry James Asmus!  But moving on, a lot still did go down here so let’s take a look at what transpired.

Sebastian Shaw.  They’ve been teasing us for months about him joining Hope’s team I was wondering how they were going to justify it, and here we are!  Amnesia (courtesy of Miss Emma Frost) is just what the doctor ordered for this storyline.  Now the question remains: Why does he register as a new mutant (or Light as it were)?  And why did he just randomly pop up on Cerebra, shouldn’t they have registered a Sebastian Shaw blip the entire time?  Hopefully answers to these questions are forthcoming in upcoming issues.

Martha Johansson.  It always a good time when they take familiar characters and give them an updated new look.  So it’s about time that Martha got some face-time (pun completely intended).  It’s also really cool to see Kenji finding new and innovative uses for his powers.  They are a little creepy to begin with so finding helpful, productive ways to use them really helps!

So basically the point of this crappy ReGenesis tie-in is to set up the new team status quo.  As long as you look at it that way, this issue is pretty good.  Pixie’s in there, now so is Sebastian Shaw, and I don’t see Martha giving up her new body any time soon even if it is connected to Kenji at all times so I bet we should expect to see her stick around for a while.  And thank god someone had a proper reaction to Shaw’s presence!  Scott’s “What the $&%# is he doing here?!” was the perfect ending and was just what was on everyone’s mind for this entire issue.  It looks like we’re gearing up for some serious Phoenix action involving Hope soon so I really hope (heehee Hope) that the writers can get it together and come up with some better dialogue and storytelling because I would hate to see the issues of this book that pertain to it go to waste.

Flash Review - 12/14/11

Avengers 1959 #4 – Are we there yet?  I don’t know, I have nothing to really say.  Story’s boring.  Not really sure what is even supposed to going on.  Just seems like Nick Fury and his cohorts are just running around aimlessly in the world chasing god knows what.  Love Namora, that’s about all I have for you guys on this issue.

Avengers: X-Sanction #1 – Yeah!  This issue could EASILY have been terrible.  They took a big risk bringing Cable back so soon (he’s really only been gone for like a year and a half) but thanks to the geius of Jeph Loeb it was a huge success!  I love that they did as little ret-conning with his “death” as possible.  They stuck to what we saw back in Second Coming.  The T-O virus took over his whole body, big damage to his metal parts, and sucked into a portal.  That all still happened, they’re even telling us that he is still going to die from the T-O virus…they just put it off an extra 24 hours.  When I first heard about this series, I thought they were gonna do something stupid like pluck a past version of Cable from the time-stream, one that doesn’t know Hope (possibly even a pre-New Mutants version), but nope!  Hope is still all that he thinks about, like any other loving parent would do.  I was also skeptical that this was an Avengers story rather than an X-men story but now that I’ve read I totally see what they’re going for and applaud their creativity (much better then when they decided to do a Dark Phoenix storyline and make it all Iron Man-centric).

Battle Scars #2 – Eh…there’s still time to save this one I think but they need to get a move on.  Supposedly this (along with the finale of Children’s Crusade) are going to kick off the next big Marvel events going on, but they need to give us something.  We’ve now had two issues of Marcus Johnson running around and escaping people and we are still no closer to knowing anything about him or why people are after him.  All we learned in this issue is that Captain America is a terrible liar and S.H.E.I.L.D. doesn’t know how to hold on to captives, EVER.  Although I do love seeing Taskmaster, they need to kick this Fear Itself epilogue into high gear because much like the Fearless, it is beginning to flounder a bit.

Buffy: Season 9 #4 – Great wrap up to the opening arc of this new series.  I think the writers really set us up with a great new status quo (which is strikingly like the old status quo that worked so well for the show).  I loved the choice of villain also.  I always saw Glory (big bad season 5) as “Buffy if she never stopped being a shallow valley girl” so it was like she was fighting herself.  Well I sorta view this guy Siphon as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer if she was a guy”.  When you look at it that way, it made this battle a perfect opening for the new season.  Also lets marvel at the fact that police are upset about someone killing hundreds of vampires…thanks Harmony!  Oh and Spike was there too!

Carnage USA #1 – I LOVE CARNAGE.  I have always loved Carnage.  Forget Spider-man, and screw Venom, Carnage is totally where I have always gotten my Spider fix.  Even when I didn’t collect Spider-man at all, I still made it a point to collect Carnage appearances.  So when I read last year’s Carnage series, I was enthralled.  Seeing Carnage and Shriek in action together again was just awesome.  But this?  An entire town infected, for lack of a better word, by the Carnage symbiote is possibly the creepiest thing that Marvel has done since the Brood.  And he may not like the Avengers very much but it’s clear he’s still holding some heavy vendetta against Spidey.  Watching him take down a team of pretty heavy hitting Avengers almost makes you say “Venom who?”  I can wait for next issue, which I fear probably be for another TWO months.  Why does Marvel only release their GREAT books every two months now? Like Children’s Crusade and the last Carnage series.

Ghost Rider #7 – Now this is what I’m talking about!  This flailing series pulled out all the stops for this issue in an effort to bring this title back up to where it should/could be…it’s like they were reading my mind I swear.  First of all, Steel Wind and Steel Vengeance?!  One of the biggest shocks of the week in any title.  And not just back…but all updated and gruesome too.  And thank the lord in heaven, Johnny Blaze is finally back!  This book just isn’t the same without him in it, and they really shouldn’t even try to.  Even if they don’t make him Ghost Rider again they should never get rid of him.  And just to shake things up a bit, they added Hawkeye, the Hothead Avenger, to the mix.  Now it’s issues like this that make a series successful!

Journey Into Mystery #632 – The Misadventures of Young Loki continue…  This time?  Hell hound puppies in desperate need of a home.  Watching Loki try his very best to do good but using his bad ways is hilarious, and of course in the end he just can’t quite give up the last puppy and so he adds it to his Cave of Misfits along with little Leah.  Every conversation with these two is hysterical and now having a nasty little pup in the background muttering meanness will just add to the humor.  Fun guest appearances by Shaman and Warlock just keep the book’s light tone going throughout.  Who needs Thor or Tanarus when we’ve got Loki?

Magneto: Not a Hero #2 – Alright, Joseph is back!  And he’s bad… You gotta hand it to that skank Astra, she sucks but she really knows how to shake things up.  Joseph’s resurrection was one of the more sensible and plausible ones I’ve seen (based, of course, on Marvel U physics).  I already love the dynamic between him and the real Magneto, quite different from their past interactions.  My only regret is that we didn’t get to see more of (or really any) of Joseph’s deformed Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, but it looks like that’ll be the first thing we see next issue so I’ll deal.

New Avengers #19 – A bit slow, but lot of set up for what looks like an epic battle between the New Avengers and the new H.A.M.M.E.R.   A few noteworthy points did happen though in this mostly uneventful issue.  Daredevil returns and he’s thinking the same thing we are “You ask me to join and then I never hear from you?”  Is Victoria Hand really playing for Osborn’s side or will we find out that Cage and/or Cap were in on it?  And Osborn debuts his new Avengers to the public.  Some big things brewing in this title I think…

Uncanny X-Force  #19 – It was good.  It really was…but it wasn’t great.  This was a great storyline and this conclusion really felt like not just a wrap-up to the Archangel storyline but also to the entire Age of Apocalypse a whole.  With a few of the remaining characters dying and a few staying here in Earth-616, it just feels like that entire story has finally just ended.  I’m somewhat disappointed on how they handled Angel and his almost death.  I spent the last few issues preparing myself for Angel to die and then watching his and Besty’s life play out (with her psychic push of course) was just wonderful.  A great death and maybe something they could take back in a few years if they wanted…but not the same issue!  I almost never approve of killing long time characters but to fake a death like that and then go with amnesia instead just seems a bit cheap to me.  Overall a great ending to the story though and now we get to see how ReGenesis and Schism affect the covert X-squad next issue.

These Kids Have Issues - Review of Avengers Academy #23

WOW!  Two words.  Heavy.  Issue.  I know I say this every few months now but Avengers Academy just KEEPS getting better!  I wasn’t feeling the loss of my favorite character, Veil, and I was somewhat nervous that she would leave a huge hole in the group, but who has time to worry about the missing vapor girl when all this craziness is happening?!  X-23 joins the team? Eh…we’ll see.  New gays in the Marvel Universe?  Always welcome when it’s done properly.  The return of Hybrid?  Amazing.  And the actual storyline about the future versions of the students?  Boring and Pass thank you.  This happens all the time in comic books, they writers decide to take a few issues to do some character work and build up relationships and while that’s all going on there’s some crappy storyline to go along with it.  But I digress…let’s get into the issue shall we?

First off, X-23.  Not really feeling it to be honest.  I don’t read her solo book but from what I gather, it’s all about her discovering herself and how to live a normal life but I don’t see how teaming up with a new super team is going to help with that (even if they are all kids her own age).  I get that the idea is to have her socialize more with her peers and get her more acclimated to interpersonal relationships but if she’s ready to do that then why can’t she be a part of the X-men again?  Not X-Force as an assassin, but just a regular X-men team.  Or even, if she’s so gung ho about being in school, go to – gee I don’t know – Wolverine’s brand new school in Westchester??  It just seems to me that she already has good friends there in Hellion and Mercury so why thrust her into a new situation with more already volatile kids.  Now on the other hand I DID love her scene with Mettle and I definitely see where she could bring a lot to this team but I just don’t follow the logic behind it and I am pretty sure she’s gonna end up in one of the X-teams if she really does decide to be a team player.

And how about that deeper then deeper scene with Striker and Lightspeed???  Didn’t see any of that coming!  Not even a little.  First of all, when Hazmat made her off color comments last issues about Lightspeed being a lesbian, I really just thought it was narrow minded stereotypical teenage meanness.  I didn’t actually think it was going to turn out to be true!  The Power Pack has been around for a long time and I just recently started reading the series recently so to see this long established (not to mention angsty) character “go gay” was a twist I totally didn’t expect.  And her whole “Im Julie.  I’m not a label or a symbol” thing was so typical newly out gay teen thing to do and such a cliché.  Loved it!  And Striker…wow…just wow.  Everyone knew that one kid in high school that was a complete womanizer only to find out years later that he was gay the entire time.  And unfortunately many people also know that person who was taken advantage of by someone older when they were a child.  It’s a very sad story and I am very proud of Christos Gage for handling these sensitive topics with such poise and grace not to mention, no pun intended, Finesse.  I look forward to seeing the friendship between these two confused characters grow in the coming months as they both explore themselves and come to terms with who they really are.

Now, of course, it wouldn’t be one of my reviews if I didn’t also give a few jabs at the book.  Christos, you were amazing on Angel & Faith, and you handled the deep issues in this issue so well…what the hell is going on with the rest of the storyline??  Where did you pull Hybrid from?  I mean props for creativity but isn’t the storyline already convoluted enough?  You had to dig Hybrid out of the vault??  And the entire scenario with the future selves is so far just a bit mind warping.  The future selves were a fun storyline when they first did the switch but now it seems a bit whacky.  Why are they doing this? And more importantly why doesn’t Reptil’s older self remember any of this in his own past?  They need to clear this one up and quickly or just move on to something else because as much as I love this book, kooky time warping storyline get old real quick.

And the shocker of the entire issue?  More than Striker coming out and more Hyrid?  In the future Finesse and Reptil have a kid!  Yeah that’s right a shape shifting offspring of their very own.  This book continues to shock me month after month and now the Gage is here I suspect we are in for quite the ride in the coming months.  I hope X-23 doesn’t stick around, I would rather take the time to get to know Lightspeed again and discover more about White Bengal.  From the looks of the next issues box, it seems like I will get everything I’m looking for in the next issue but we’ll see about that!
