Flash Review - 12/21/11

Avengers #20 – Yawn!  They’re really stretching out the Shattered Heroes concept too far much like they did with the Heroic Age arcs.  Additionally, between this title and New Avengers they are also stretching the Norman Osborn angle out too far.  I get that they are gearing up for something big involving him and both teams but they should build up to it a little slower and in one book at a time.  Best part of the book was Viper getting her hair back and losing that gross squid!  And I love how Osborn is so crazy that hes hilarious to himself (and the rest of us) at all times.

Fear Itself: The Fearless #5 – It’s really not over yet?  But we’re almost halfway there?  Thank god!  This series is getting worse and worse.  The big premise of this issue was Valkyrie confronting Thing for the hammer, and then he just gave it to her!  WTF!  Big letdown…  Another story that did NOT need a full issue to tell.  Marvel is basically just stringing us along until the next big event (which is granted a Phoenix story and therefore perfect for me but still).Again though, at least we’re almost halfway done with it.

New Mutants #35 – Not bad, getting a little drawn out also but not bad.  I’ve really enjoyed watching Nate Grey integrate into the team (which has gone much smoother then I would have expected).  And I truly hope that Blink says around.  It’s good that she has a place to land since her generation of students has all but disbanded and gone their separate ways.  Consider that the New Mutants are still together and the New X-men are all pretty much still around each other but Generation X has split to the winds with Husk in New York with Wolverine, Jubilee and Chamber with Cyclops and Emma, M with X-Factor and everyone else pretty much dead so it’s good that she has a place with the older group (which could be considered something of a promotion).

X-Factor #229 – BORED NOW!  I don’t know where the writers are going with this one but I’m not feeling it!  The Bloodbath story in general was a little bit of a disappointment to begin with and no I am just completely lost as to what is going on with Jaime.  My best guess is that when he “died” he went to some alternate dimension/timeline or something like that and he’s there while his whole team thinks he’s dead which leaves an opening for Havok and Polaris to come back next issue and take over again.  Just my best guess.  As for the entire scene that Jaime is watching unfold, (including a living Banshee and Rahne’s forsaken child) I don’t know what I really think…  I do wonder how and when they will wrap this up since it seems like Wolverine shows up next issue (with Alex and Lorna in tow presumably).  Only time will tell, let’s just hope it’s not too much time.

Hellfire Comes Calling - Review Generation Hope #14

This is going to be a bit of a short review this time guys because, to be truthful, nothing really struck me too strongly this week (for good or bad).  So I picked the issue that I felt like the most happened…this one!  For what it’s worth, a lot went down for the Lights in this issue, I guess I wasn’t thrilled because typically the storytelling in this book is a bit underwhelming…  Sorry James Asmus!  But moving on, a lot still did go down here so let’s take a look at what transpired.

Sebastian Shaw.  They’ve been teasing us for months about him joining Hope’s team I was wondering how they were going to justify it, and here we are!  Amnesia (courtesy of Miss Emma Frost) is just what the doctor ordered for this storyline.  Now the question remains: Why does he register as a new mutant (or Light as it were)?  And why did he just randomly pop up on Cerebra, shouldn’t they have registered a Sebastian Shaw blip the entire time?  Hopefully answers to these questions are forthcoming in upcoming issues.

Martha Johansson.  It always a good time when they take familiar characters and give them an updated new look.  So it’s about time that Martha got some face-time (pun completely intended).  It’s also really cool to see Kenji finding new and innovative uses for his powers.  They are a little creepy to begin with so finding helpful, productive ways to use them really helps!

So basically the point of this crappy ReGenesis tie-in is to set up the new team status quo.  As long as you look at it that way, this issue is pretty good.  Pixie’s in there, now so is Sebastian Shaw, and I don’t see Martha giving up her new body any time soon even if it is connected to Kenji at all times so I bet we should expect to see her stick around for a while.  And thank god someone had a proper reaction to Shaw’s presence!  Scott’s “What the $&%# is he doing here?!” was the perfect ending and was just what was on everyone’s mind for this entire issue.  It looks like we’re gearing up for some serious Phoenix action involving Hope soon so I really hope (heehee Hope) that the writers can get it together and come up with some better dialogue and storytelling because I would hate to see the issues of this book that pertain to it go to waste.
