Mutant Generations 4: Magneto's Legacy

In my last installment of Mutant Generations, I explored how the children of two human parents don’t necessarily guarantee human offspring.  This time I’m going in the other direction.  This time I’ll be showing how powered and powerful parents don’t really guarantee that you’ll get a super powered child as I explore the family line of one the greatest mutant terrorists/saviors of all time: Magneto.

Anya (last name unconfirmed, maybe Eisenhardt) – After escaping from the Auschwitz, Max Eisenhardt and his wife, Magda, made their way to a city called Vinnytsia.  They had a daughter named Anya and it came to no surprise to anyone (since her father’s mutant powers of magnetism had not yet surfaced) that she was completely human.  It was Anya’s death in a burning building (having no special powers to protect herself with) that catalyzed Max Eisenhardt’s powers, which he used to raze the entire village.

Horrified by her husband’s actions, Magda ran from her husband and they never saw each other again.  What Magneto didn’t know was the Magda was pregnant with twins.  Each of these twins grew to be great heroes and villains in their own right.

Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver) – Pietro and his sister were raised by gypsy couple Django and Marya Maximoff.  He used his super speed powers to protect his helpless and unpredictable sister as they traveled around Europe.  The twins were later recruited into their father’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (with all parties aware of their relationship) but eventually escaped his indentured servitude.  As Quicksilver he became a valued member of both the Avengers and the government sponsored X-Factor.  He eventually fell from grace during the House of M where he manipulated his sister into altering reality then followed by his subsequent theft and abuse of the Inhumans’ Terrigen Crystals.  He has since redeemed himself and is now a teacher for the Avengers Academy.

Luna Maximoff – Pietro eventually married Inhuman and fellow Avengers Crystal.  These two had a daughter and named her Luna, after the moon that the Inhumans lived on.  As Luna grew older, her parents decided not to expose her to the terrigen mist, as was the Inhumans custom, and despite her Inhuman and mutant parentage, and after being tested it was determined that the Inhuman and mutant genetic markers cancelled each other out and left her as a baseline human.  Eventually, during a bout of madness, her father exposed her to the mists giving her an unstable and addictive mutation that gave her empathic abilities which she has learned to utilize in many different ways

Wanda Maximoff – The other child of Max and Magda Eisenhardt grew into an equally powerful and tragic figure.  After running from her husband and his new powers, Magda made her way to Wundagore Mountain.  Upon reaching it, she met the bovine midwife Bova, who helped deliver the twins.  At the exact moment that the twins were born, the Elder God Chthon was being banished from the Earth and, as he left, he left a touch of his magic on the baby Wanda.  As Wanda grew, she developed not only her unpredictable hex power, but also she developed a skill at magic, tutored by her mentor Agatha Harkness.  After her and Quicksilver left Magneto’s Brotherhood, she became a long-time and valued member of the Avengers and the Avengers West, and also married her android teammate, the Vision, and the two miraculous had twins boys.  These babies turned out to be only manifestations of Mephisto’s soul and eventually disappeared into the ether.  Eventually the combination of her hex ability and her magic developed into a mastery (or lack thereof) in Chaos magic which proved to be her undoing as, upon revelation of the truth of her own children she had a nervous breakdown and, through the manipulation of her brother, altered reality and caused the depowering of 98% of the mutant race.  Recently she has resurfaced, sans her memory, during the Children’s Crusade, where the reincarnations of her lost children have been searching for her.

William Kaplan (Wiccan) – Billy Kaplan had all the regular troubles of a gay teenager, along with a fixation for his favorite Avenger, the Scarlet Witch.  He even got the chance to meet his idol outside of Avengers Mansion after being bullied by a boy at school and she assured him that everyone had a gift.  During his next confrontation with the bully his electrical powers activated and he almost killed the boy.  He joined the Young Avengers, first going by the name Asgardian (and later Wiccan), it was later revealed that, in addition to lightning, he could also cast spells and fly.  He later met Tommy Shepard, another super powered youth who was his exact double (except for Tommy had white hair as opposed to Billy’s black hair).  During a confrontation with the Super Skrull, it was noted that Billy had very similar powers to the missing Scarlet Witch.  It has since been confirmed that Billy and Tommy ARE in fact somehow reincarnations of Wanda’s dead/missing children.  There are major concerns that Billy Kaplan may become another Scarlet Witch.

Thomas Shepard (Speed) – When the Young Avengers were looking for new members, they discovered speedster Tommy Shepard.  Upon rescuing him from captivity in a high powered juvenile detention center (where he was because he accidentally destroyed his school), it was immediately noted that he had a striking resemblance to Billy Kaplan (teammate Wiccan).  The two boys, who grew up separately, consider themselves to be brothers, and the children of the Scarlet Witch.    While Billy appears to have inherited Wanda’s reality warping powers, Tommy has developed super speed like Wanda’s twin brother Pietro (he also has Quicksilver’s trademark white hair, just like he father before him)

Lastly, we have a relatively recent addition to Magneto’s family.

Lorna Dane (Polaris) – Originally Lorna Dane was a latent mutant with no powers and only green hair to show that she was any different from the general populous.  After being kidnapped by Mesmero and subjected to the psyche-generator which activated her latent powers of magnetism, and she was hailed as M-2, the daughter of Magneto.  At first this was shown to be false, and Lorna (first adopting the codename Magnetrix, and then later Polaris) joined the X-men and fought mutant villains by their side.  She eventually left the X-men but kept being dragged back in by various enemies (like being mind controlled by Erik the Red and much later, possessed by the Marauder Malice).  She joined the government sponsored X-Factor team and later rejoined the X-men again.  Following a battle with Apocalypse, Lorna journeyed to Genosha with Magneto to learn how to better use her own magnetic powers, and it was during her stay here that she learned that she WAS in fact magneto’s daughter from an affair he had had many years ago.  Since then, since being cast out and disowned by the twins, he has come to think of her as his own child and legacy, even hailing her as his one true heir.

So this just goes to show you that having a powerful mutant father or grandfather does not necessarily guarantee that a child will also be a powerful mutant.  In the case of Anya, it is possible that she would have later developed powers but she was already old enough to where that would have happened.  With Luna, we have a case where having so many powered family members actually cancelled out her chances of getting powers of her own and left her baseline human, until of course she was exposed to the mists.  And with Polaris, it has been stated that she was a latent mutant and wouldn’t have ever manifested her powers without outside help, although her children would like have the potential to gain these powers.

Countdown to ReGenesis Part 3

Big updates on the ReGenesis promotional images!  And with fewer and fewer shadowy figures left, we can now start to make some guesses as to who's left to be seen!

Generation Hope - Well there's no surprises here except for Sebastian Shaw (who we've seen for a while now) and Idie seems to be missing but if you're reading Schism then that shouldn't be a surprise.  My guess for the last shadow is kind of a no-brainer, Kenji.

X-men (Vol. 3) - We knew that Jubilee and Storm were there but now we've got Warpath and Psylocke!  I'm really not sure who the last shadow is going to be but if I had to guess I would say Polaris or Marvel Girl (remember Lorna's late 70's and early 80's costume that Erik the Red gave her? And I can't honestly see Marvel bring Rachel back and then NOT putting her with her father somehow).

Uncanny X-men - Nothing to guess here! Cyclops, Emma, Jugger-lossus, Magik, Magneto and Danger.  Awesome team!!  I'm a bit disappointed to see Illyana not on the New Mutants anymore but I'm guessing that she has to look after her newly Cyttorak-enhanced brother.

New Mutants - No real surprises here either.  We already saw X-man, but now we've got Warlock, Mirage and Sunspot.  I think the last two figures are going to be Cypher (in the middle) and, I don't know, maybe Dust? or Amelia Voight?  The cloudy wake behind whoever it is (and it looks kinda like a girl) kinda makes it seem like it could be one of these ladies.

Uncanny X-Force - Joining AOA Nightcrawler (nerdgasm!) on X-Force is Deadpool which is no  shock.  In the shadow on the right seems to clearly be Fantomex but who's that on the left?  It appears to be Psylocke with her glowing swords and telltale waist sash, but she's already been shown to be over in X-men (Vol. 3) so what going on?? Here's my theories: A) She pulling double duty here and over there as a mole for Wolverine (especially since, technically, no one knows X-Force exists) or B) Somehow, someway, Revanche has made a return.  It's strange days for the X-men lately so either of these could be true, but more important is Warren Worthington's notable absence from the picture...

Wolverine & the X-men - Kitty Pryde and Wolverine back together again (with Lockheed in tow)! With Jubilee on the other side of the Schism, maybe we will see a resurgence of this old partnership from the early 80's.  Joining them on the new Gold Team is Iceman the only original X-man to be confirmed as NOT on Cyclops' side. As for the shadows, I am having trouble with this one...for the silhouette on the right I am thinking its a big muscle character all hunched over so maybe Rockslide or Onyxx (who may or may not be deceased, I am not entirely clear on that), or maybe its a returning Beast fresh from his Secret Avengers adventures!  The left shadow I think may end up being Kid Omega.  I doubt they'd make him so important in the Schism only to have him die (again).  I'm even tempted to say that the cause of the Schism is over how to handle Quentin Quire, and maybe Wolverine is forced to prevent Cyclops from handing him over to the local authorities.  And the one on top is a real puzzler...it seems distinctly female and with a fiery aura about her so some people are rumoring it to be Jean, but I think more likely its Rachel if anything (although I am hoping she ends up on Cyclops' side instead).

X-men: Legacy - It's no surprise to see Gambit and Frenzy still with Rogue, after all they made a huge deal about them joining her book/team and, honestly, I doubt anyone else wants them on their squad at the moment.  The shadow I have to be honest, I have absolutely no idea!  Strangely enough when I look at the silhouette I get a picture of the 90's Malibu character, Siren, which I know is impossible and silly.  My BEST guess?  Hepzibah!!  We have barely seen her since the team moved to San Francisco and she's I think she's due to come back!  Although if it turns out to be her, I wonder what that would mean for her relationsip with Warpath, who is shown over on Cyclops' side on the cover of X-men (Vol. 3) #20.

X-Factor #230 - The big shock here isn't what IS shown, but what ISN'T shown!  Everyone got very excited at the prospect of Havok coming back, but as more and more characters have been revealed a startling roster change is becoming more apparent.  Joining Alex Summers, we now have Wolfsbane, Shatterstar, Rictor, Layla, and M, with two shadows left who very obviously seem like Guido and Banshee (Teresa Cassidy not a resurrected Sean).  What we DON'T see is Jaime Madrox!  With the former leader of X-Factor returning to the fold it might seem weird for him to take a back seat to Jaime's leadership...unless Jaime's no longer there?!  With the recent revelation that someone on X-Factor IS going to die soon, maybe the founder of X-Factor Investigations is going to die, again, to make way for the leader of the government sponsored X-Factor to step back into the driver's seat.  Also missing from this shot is Longshot and Darwin, but these aren't huge shocks since Darwin's been gone for a minute (and apparently isn't returning) and Longshot always seems to just up and disappear at a moment's notice (i.e. Uncanny X-men #248).

So there's your ReGenesis update!  A few questions to mull over though...with all these casting shake-ups happening what about the members that they have been building up for the past few years like Dazzler? or Pixie and Anole (not to mention the rest of the New/Young X-men)?  And what does this split mean for the Astonishing team?  I mean, sure Cyclops, Emma, Storm, Colossus are together on one side, but Wolverine and Kitty are on the other side and Wolverine and Armor have become very close so where do her loyalties lie?

Flash Review - 8/31/11

This week the comic gods answered my prayers and gave me a nice light week so that me and my wallet could take a breather.  So all I have for you in this week’s Flash Review from Marvel is Gambit, Fear Itself and Secret Avengers, but we also got a special treat from Dark Horse Comics as Buffy Season 9 began with Angel & Faith!

Angel & Faith #1 – With the exception of a few flashbacks and one seemingly simple battle with a Plagiarus demon this premier issue lacked a ton of major action…BUT…that didn’t stop it from being an awesome installment!  We got some flashbacks of Giles, some back story as to what Faith and Angel have been up to and we got set up with villains, plotlines, and foils for the entire series.  In true Joss Whedon style we got a ton of valuable information without it being shoved down our throats.  I can’t wait to see where Season 9 goes!

Gambit and the Champions: From the Marvel Vault – What is there to say?  This was terrible.  They took old art, had writers add new words to it, and through on the shelves.  I’ll just assume that this story was set in some alternate universe where everyone talks even more awkwardly then usual and Johnny Blaze has a serious southern drawl (“I reckon y’all should let me fry his soul and be done with it”, really Ghostie? Do ya reckon?)  I totally understand that it was a tribute to George Tuska and was not meant to be taken as a serious story but still, for $2.99 they should put a little more effort into the dialogue and production value.

Fear Itself: The Deep #3 – To be honest, if this came out in a week when there were 8 other tie-in issues I may not have liked it.  I found that I actually liked this makeshift Defenders team.  I wasn’t really enjoying Namor’s time with the X-men, he never seemed to fit in really, so I am glad that he and Loa (who used to just be another X-kid) have another place to land.  I also like Lyra more and more every time I see her (which admittedly isn’t much since I don’t follow Hulk comics) and of course Dr. Strange and Silver Surfer are always exciting to watch (although I wonder how the Surfer is here when he is supposedly busy in space being an Annihilator).  Great battle with Tiger Shark and an awesome cliffhanger of Attuma, this has definitely been one of the better Fear Itself minis.

Secret Avengers #16 – Eh...It’s just the “other Avengers book”.  The best part of this issue was Beast and his hilarious banter (especially with Moon Knight), but he hasn’t even been in enough of the issues to make it worth it lately.  This book was supposed to be the secret black ops Avengers squad but they’re missions aren’t SO covert and SO secret/special to warrant their own book.  I (and probably other fans) were somewhat led to believe that this was would be more like X-Force and that’s been a big part of the letdown.  The stories are drawn out and don’t seem to have any effects on anything else, which to me just makes the whole series really pointless.  I keep buying it for Beast so I am hoping that he either quits or the book gets cancelled.
