Spotlight On...X-Factor - Review X-Factor 224.1

Let me start of by saying that I've really enjoyed the "Point One" issue from Marvel this year.  They did exactly what we were told they were going to do, gave easy jumping on points for new readers while also moving forward with the storyline for the veteran fans.  Now of course some have been better then other, and for the most part the contained stories have been pretty weak, but they did their job and did it well!  I particularly enjoyed the Uncanny X-men Point One issue where Magneto had his public unveiling as an X-man.

X-Factor's Point One installment was no different.  Set to the framing story of Layla Miller and Madrox visiting his old farm, where he grew up "alone", and getting into a conversation with the family who resides there now.  Meanwhile, the rest of X-Factor is out on a mission staking out an old woman who MAY be demon.Well of course she IS a demon and as Madrox is talking about his teammates to the mother and her child on the farm, we are getting flashes and highlights from the battle between them and the "old woman".  Perfectly in synch with the whole Point One thing, this issue didn't give us experienced readers much but, for new readers,  there was a wealth of knowledge as they one by one went through the member of X-Factor and gave the audience a run down of them and their powers (or in some cases lack of).  It was a perfectly crafted stand alone story that served its purpose, was self contained, and MAY lead to future stories but doesn't necessarily have to.  It even left us with a a murderous cliffhanger with everyone wondering, "Who's BB????" All in all a good issue.

But of course every good issue has its problems right?  For one thing there is the aforementioned weak storyline.  This is a small complaint and it was done almost one purpose, I think so that they could focus on the characters, fine.  There are even stories this boring and its NOT done on purpose so that just fine.  The really big gripe was that Layla and Jaime let that woman die!  If you read the pages close enough you saw Jaime tell the mother and son that he used to live there, but no where on any page were we necessarily told that that was for sure his old farm so who's to say that it was even the same farm.  There's also Layla's sly little comment, "you should have hid better."  So unless there was a really large coincidence, they came there stalking whatever monster was inside the young boy, not for a friendly visit to his childhood home.  Which means that Jaime and Layla knew that there was a dangerous monster there (maybe not killer dangerous but at least dangerous enough to be checked up on) and not only did Layla taunt it, but they left that poor woman there with no protection besides a business card.  Now, there is always the chance that Layla knew and Jaime didn't (she's pulled that crap before so we already know that she's kinda shady) but I just don't get that impression plus that silence and sideways glances between them tell me that Jaime knows the score.

Overall, a good issue, just like most of the other Point One's, but it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth as far as Jaime and Layla are concerned, I somewhat expected better from at least him.  I almost wonder if this storyline is a lead-in to whatever caused Jaime to be absent from the X-men: ReGenesis X-Factor promo (meanwhile Alex Summer is miraculously front and center in the picture.)  However, new readers were treated to a continuity-lite story and explanations on all the major players on X-Factor so its a job well done and a thumbs up from me for this issue!

Mutant Generations 4: Magneto's Legacy

In my last installment of Mutant Generations, I explored how the children of two human parents don’t necessarily guarantee human offspring.  This time I’m going in the other direction.  This time I’ll be showing how powered and powerful parents don’t really guarantee that you’ll get a super powered child as I explore the family line of one the greatest mutant terrorists/saviors of all time: Magneto.

Anya (last name unconfirmed, maybe Eisenhardt) – After escaping from the Auschwitz, Max Eisenhardt and his wife, Magda, made their way to a city called Vinnytsia.  They had a daughter named Anya and it came to no surprise to anyone (since her father’s mutant powers of magnetism had not yet surfaced) that she was completely human.  It was Anya’s death in a burning building (having no special powers to protect herself with) that catalyzed Max Eisenhardt’s powers, which he used to raze the entire village.

Horrified by her husband’s actions, Magda ran from her husband and they never saw each other again.  What Magneto didn’t know was the Magda was pregnant with twins.  Each of these twins grew to be great heroes and villains in their own right.

Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver) – Pietro and his sister were raised by gypsy couple Django and Marya Maximoff.  He used his super speed powers to protect his helpless and unpredictable sister as they traveled around Europe.  The twins were later recruited into their father’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (with all parties aware of their relationship) but eventually escaped his indentured servitude.  As Quicksilver he became a valued member of both the Avengers and the government sponsored X-Factor.  He eventually fell from grace during the House of M where he manipulated his sister into altering reality then followed by his subsequent theft and abuse of the Inhumans’ Terrigen Crystals.  He has since redeemed himself and is now a teacher for the Avengers Academy.

Luna Maximoff – Pietro eventually married Inhuman and fellow Avengers Crystal.  These two had a daughter and named her Luna, after the moon that the Inhumans lived on.  As Luna grew older, her parents decided not to expose her to the terrigen mist, as was the Inhumans custom, and despite her Inhuman and mutant parentage, and after being tested it was determined that the Inhuman and mutant genetic markers cancelled each other out and left her as a baseline human.  Eventually, during a bout of madness, her father exposed her to the mists giving her an unstable and addictive mutation that gave her empathic abilities which she has learned to utilize in many different ways

Wanda Maximoff – The other child of Max and Magda Eisenhardt grew into an equally powerful and tragic figure.  After running from her husband and his new powers, Magda made her way to Wundagore Mountain.  Upon reaching it, she met the bovine midwife Bova, who helped deliver the twins.  At the exact moment that the twins were born, the Elder God Chthon was being banished from the Earth and, as he left, he left a touch of his magic on the baby Wanda.  As Wanda grew, she developed not only her unpredictable hex power, but also she developed a skill at magic, tutored by her mentor Agatha Harkness.  After her and Quicksilver left Magneto’s Brotherhood, she became a long-time and valued member of the Avengers and the Avengers West, and also married her android teammate, the Vision, and the two miraculous had twins boys.  These babies turned out to be only manifestations of Mephisto’s soul and eventually disappeared into the ether.  Eventually the combination of her hex ability and her magic developed into a mastery (or lack thereof) in Chaos magic which proved to be her undoing as, upon revelation of the truth of her own children she had a nervous breakdown and, through the manipulation of her brother, altered reality and caused the depowering of 98% of the mutant race.  Recently she has resurfaced, sans her memory, during the Children’s Crusade, where the reincarnations of her lost children have been searching for her.

William Kaplan (Wiccan) – Billy Kaplan had all the regular troubles of a gay teenager, along with a fixation for his favorite Avenger, the Scarlet Witch.  He even got the chance to meet his idol outside of Avengers Mansion after being bullied by a boy at school and she assured him that everyone had a gift.  During his next confrontation with the bully his electrical powers activated and he almost killed the boy.  He joined the Young Avengers, first going by the name Asgardian (and later Wiccan), it was later revealed that, in addition to lightning, he could also cast spells and fly.  He later met Tommy Shepard, another super powered youth who was his exact double (except for Tommy had white hair as opposed to Billy’s black hair).  During a confrontation with the Super Skrull, it was noted that Billy had very similar powers to the missing Scarlet Witch.  It has since been confirmed that Billy and Tommy ARE in fact somehow reincarnations of Wanda’s dead/missing children.  There are major concerns that Billy Kaplan may become another Scarlet Witch.

Thomas Shepard (Speed) – When the Young Avengers were looking for new members, they discovered speedster Tommy Shepard.  Upon rescuing him from captivity in a high powered juvenile detention center (where he was because he accidentally destroyed his school), it was immediately noted that he had a striking resemblance to Billy Kaplan (teammate Wiccan).  The two boys, who grew up separately, consider themselves to be brothers, and the children of the Scarlet Witch.    While Billy appears to have inherited Wanda’s reality warping powers, Tommy has developed super speed like Wanda’s twin brother Pietro (he also has Quicksilver’s trademark white hair, just like he father before him)

Lastly, we have a relatively recent addition to Magneto’s family.

Lorna Dane (Polaris) – Originally Lorna Dane was a latent mutant with no powers and only green hair to show that she was any different from the general populous.  After being kidnapped by Mesmero and subjected to the psyche-generator which activated her latent powers of magnetism, and she was hailed as M-2, the daughter of Magneto.  At first this was shown to be false, and Lorna (first adopting the codename Magnetrix, and then later Polaris) joined the X-men and fought mutant villains by their side.  She eventually left the X-men but kept being dragged back in by various enemies (like being mind controlled by Erik the Red and much later, possessed by the Marauder Malice).  She joined the government sponsored X-Factor team and later rejoined the X-men again.  Following a battle with Apocalypse, Lorna journeyed to Genosha with Magneto to learn how to better use her own magnetic powers, and it was during her stay here that she learned that she WAS in fact magneto’s daughter from an affair he had had many years ago.  Since then, since being cast out and disowned by the twins, he has come to think of her as his own child and legacy, even hailing her as his one true heir.

So this just goes to show you that having a powerful mutant father or grandfather does not necessarily guarantee that a child will also be a powerful mutant.  In the case of Anya, it is possible that she would have later developed powers but she was already old enough to where that would have happened.  With Luna, we have a case where having so many powered family members actually cancelled out her chances of getting powers of her own and left her baseline human, until of course she was exposed to the mists.  And with Polaris, it has been stated that she was a latent mutant and wouldn’t have ever manifested her powers without outside help, although her children would like have the potential to gain these powers.

Countdown to ReGenesis Part 3

Big updates on the ReGenesis promotional images!  And with fewer and fewer shadowy figures left, we can now start to make some guesses as to who's left to be seen!

Generation Hope - Well there's no surprises here except for Sebastian Shaw (who we've seen for a while now) and Idie seems to be missing but if you're reading Schism then that shouldn't be a surprise.  My guess for the last shadow is kind of a no-brainer, Kenji.

X-men (Vol. 3) - We knew that Jubilee and Storm were there but now we've got Warpath and Psylocke!  I'm really not sure who the last shadow is going to be but if I had to guess I would say Polaris or Marvel Girl (remember Lorna's late 70's and early 80's costume that Erik the Red gave her? And I can't honestly see Marvel bring Rachel back and then NOT putting her with her father somehow).

Uncanny X-men - Nothing to guess here! Cyclops, Emma, Jugger-lossus, Magik, Magneto and Danger.  Awesome team!!  I'm a bit disappointed to see Illyana not on the New Mutants anymore but I'm guessing that she has to look after her newly Cyttorak-enhanced brother.

New Mutants - No real surprises here either.  We already saw X-man, but now we've got Warlock, Mirage and Sunspot.  I think the last two figures are going to be Cypher (in the middle) and, I don't know, maybe Dust? or Amelia Voight?  The cloudy wake behind whoever it is (and it looks kinda like a girl) kinda makes it seem like it could be one of these ladies.

Uncanny X-Force - Joining AOA Nightcrawler (nerdgasm!) on X-Force is Deadpool which is no  shock.  In the shadow on the right seems to clearly be Fantomex but who's that on the left?  It appears to be Psylocke with her glowing swords and telltale waist sash, but she's already been shown to be over in X-men (Vol. 3) so what going on?? Here's my theories: A) She pulling double duty here and over there as a mole for Wolverine (especially since, technically, no one knows X-Force exists) or B) Somehow, someway, Revanche has made a return.  It's strange days for the X-men lately so either of these could be true, but more important is Warren Worthington's notable absence from the picture...

Wolverine & the X-men - Kitty Pryde and Wolverine back together again (with Lockheed in tow)! With Jubilee on the other side of the Schism, maybe we will see a resurgence of this old partnership from the early 80's.  Joining them on the new Gold Team is Iceman the only original X-man to be confirmed as NOT on Cyclops' side. As for the shadows, I am having trouble with this one...for the silhouette on the right I am thinking its a big muscle character all hunched over so maybe Rockslide or Onyxx (who may or may not be deceased, I am not entirely clear on that), or maybe its a returning Beast fresh from his Secret Avengers adventures!  The left shadow I think may end up being Kid Omega.  I doubt they'd make him so important in the Schism only to have him die (again).  I'm even tempted to say that the cause of the Schism is over how to handle Quentin Quire, and maybe Wolverine is forced to prevent Cyclops from handing him over to the local authorities.  And the one on top is a real puzzler...it seems distinctly female and with a fiery aura about her so some people are rumoring it to be Jean, but I think more likely its Rachel if anything (although I am hoping she ends up on Cyclops' side instead).

X-men: Legacy - It's no surprise to see Gambit and Frenzy still with Rogue, after all they made a huge deal about them joining her book/team and, honestly, I doubt anyone else wants them on their squad at the moment.  The shadow I have to be honest, I have absolutely no idea!  Strangely enough when I look at the silhouette I get a picture of the 90's Malibu character, Siren, which I know is impossible and silly.  My BEST guess?  Hepzibah!!  We have barely seen her since the team moved to San Francisco and she's I think she's due to come back!  Although if it turns out to be her, I wonder what that would mean for her relationsip with Warpath, who is shown over on Cyclops' side on the cover of X-men (Vol. 3) #20.

X-Factor #230 - The big shock here isn't what IS shown, but what ISN'T shown!  Everyone got very excited at the prospect of Havok coming back, but as more and more characters have been revealed a startling roster change is becoming more apparent.  Joining Alex Summers, we now have Wolfsbane, Shatterstar, Rictor, Layla, and M, with two shadows left who very obviously seem like Guido and Banshee (Teresa Cassidy not a resurrected Sean).  What we DON'T see is Jaime Madrox!  With the former leader of X-Factor returning to the fold it might seem weird for him to take a back seat to Jaime's leadership...unless Jaime's no longer there?!  With the recent revelation that someone on X-Factor IS going to die soon, maybe the founder of X-Factor Investigations is going to die, again, to make way for the leader of the government sponsored X-Factor to step back into the driver's seat.  Also missing from this shot is Longshot and Darwin, but these aren't huge shocks since Darwin's been gone for a minute (and apparently isn't returning) and Longshot always seems to just up and disappear at a moment's notice (i.e. Uncanny X-men #248).

So there's your ReGenesis update!  A few questions to mull over though...with all these casting shake-ups happening what about the members that they have been building up for the past few years like Dazzler? or Pixie and Anole (not to mention the rest of the New/Young X-men)?  And what does this split mean for the Astonishing team?  I mean, sure Cyclops, Emma, Storm, Colossus are together on one side, but Wolverine and Kitty are on the other side and Wolverine and Armor have become very close so where do her loyalties lie?

Flash Review - 8/31/11

This week the comic gods answered my prayers and gave me a nice light week so that me and my wallet could take a breather.  So all I have for you in this week’s Flash Review from Marvel is Gambit, Fear Itself and Secret Avengers, but we also got a special treat from Dark Horse Comics as Buffy Season 9 began with Angel & Faith!

Angel & Faith #1 – With the exception of a few flashbacks and one seemingly simple battle with a Plagiarus demon this premier issue lacked a ton of major action…BUT…that didn’t stop it from being an awesome installment!  We got some flashbacks of Giles, some back story as to what Faith and Angel have been up to and we got set up with villains, plotlines, and foils for the entire series.  In true Joss Whedon style we got a ton of valuable information without it being shoved down our throats.  I can’t wait to see where Season 9 goes!

Gambit and the Champions: From the Marvel Vault – What is there to say?  This was terrible.  They took old art, had writers add new words to it, and through on the shelves.  I’ll just assume that this story was set in some alternate universe where everyone talks even more awkwardly then usual and Johnny Blaze has a serious southern drawl (“I reckon y’all should let me fry his soul and be done with it”, really Ghostie? Do ya reckon?)  I totally understand that it was a tribute to George Tuska and was not meant to be taken as a serious story but still, for $2.99 they should put a little more effort into the dialogue and production value.

Fear Itself: The Deep #3 – To be honest, if this came out in a week when there were 8 other tie-in issues I may not have liked it.  I found that I actually liked this makeshift Defenders team.  I wasn’t really enjoying Namor’s time with the X-men, he never seemed to fit in really, so I am glad that he and Loa (who used to just be another X-kid) have another place to land.  I also like Lyra more and more every time I see her (which admittedly isn’t much since I don’t follow Hulk comics) and of course Dr. Strange and Silver Surfer are always exciting to watch (although I wonder how the Surfer is here when he is supposedly busy in space being an Annihilator).  Great battle with Tiger Shark and an awesome cliffhanger of Attuma, this has definitely been one of the better Fear Itself minis.

Secret Avengers #16 – Eh...It’s just the “other Avengers book”.  The best part of this issue was Beast and his hilarious banter (especially with Moon Knight), but he hasn’t even been in enough of the issues to make it worth it lately.  This book was supposed to be the secret black ops Avengers squad but they’re missions aren’t SO covert and SO secret/special to warrant their own book.  I (and probably other fans) were somewhat led to believe that this was would be more like X-Force and that’s been a big part of the letdown.  The stories are drawn out and don’t seem to have any effects on anything else, which to me just makes the whole series really pointless.  I keep buying it for Beast so I am hoping that he either quits or the book gets cancelled.

Thor Odinson...will he make it??

So as by now everyone that's going to read it has read Fear Itself #5 and knows that Thor is in really bad shape.  What you might not know it that he is ALSO conspicuously missing from all of the Shattered Heroes promotional images that have been released.  So this has led many of us to wonder if Thor is going to survive the events of Fear Itself after the final battle with the Serpent.  Well here's your chance to weigh in on it!!  Do you think that Thor will make it??

Do you think Thor is going to live through Fear Itself?
Yeah he'll make it!
Not sure...but he'll come back anyway!
Nah, he's a goner!!

Starved for Apocalypse - Review Uncanny X-Force #14

Maybe it’s the sun I got this weekend or the residual glowing feeling from the Stevie Nicks concert I went to this weekend, but this issue was excellent!  I was honestly starting to feel like the entire Archangel/Apocalypse storyline was getting played out, yet again, but this installment really brought it back!

It’s one thing for Apocalypse to take on a new host, as we’ve seen him do in the past, but usually that new host just becomes a new Apocalypse.  Not this time folks!!  This isn’t just some NEW Apocalypse in a different body.  “Archangel” has become his own entity within Warren’s body and he has his own ideas on how to bring Apocalypse’s dream to fruition.  The first thing we saw was his shower Ozymandias with more praise in a single page then we ever saw Apocalypse give him in the years since his introduction.  So much so that Ozzy almost didn’t know how to react to being giving proper respect for his position.  Not to mention his obvious disdain for “honorifics” is a clear clash of ideologies with his creator.  Archangel’s insistence that he and Dark Beast, and presumably all of Apocalypse’s former followers, are “brothers in this work” and his desire for only their honest opinions is something that we rarely see in ANY megalomaniacal villain.

And Hello there, Holocaust….oops I mean Genocide!  This, I thought, was a great twist!  When we first saw Genocide’s image on the last page of issue 13, I was like “Oh wow!  Holocaust is back, that’s awesome!”  But no…this is better.  First of all, it was amazing to see Famine again.  After X-cutioner’s Song back in the 90’s, she and War (Abraham Kieros) simply disappeared only to be replaced by a slew of Horsemen from all around the Marvel Universe (i.e. Hulk, Polaris, Gambit, Sunfire, Gazer, Wolverine, Ahab, and Deathbird).  So when Archangel walked into a room (cell?) and spoke to Autumn so gently about her son, it was a big shock!  Upon meeting her son, I can’t help but wonder if this is the 616 version of Holocaust (who until now was rumored to be 198 member, Feverpitch) or just someone with similar powers…I am definitely hopeful that this is the real Holocaust though.   I am hoping we see more of Autumn because the 4 panels we saw of her were her most interesting and exciting panels since Fall of the Mutants.  And a quick shoutout to Genocide's "tantrum" when he flash fried half of Wolverine's body off!!

Now it wouldn’t be one of MY reviews if I didn’t have some sort of complaint right?  Getting back to Abraham Kieros…where the hell is he??  I know that Apocalypse took his powers (leaving his paralyzed again) but I also know that Warren found him in Wolverine #147 and healed him which leaves a perfect opening for him to come back now under Archangel’s control.  And my other complaint is the secret hidden underground hideout…did someone read this week’s issue of Secret Avengers??  It’s basically the same set up, up to and including the round “secret” elevator into the ground leading to the huge underground city.

Overall, Uncanny X-Force is getting better and better!  I was really upset when they renumbered it with a brand new team, and I haven’t liked the way they’ve been pushing out issues so quickly, but the “Dark Angel Saga” has been fantastic!  I am very scrutinizing of anything titled the “Dark ____ Saga" but this series and its main antagonist have truly earned the “Dark” title.  I only hope that Warren Worthington survives at the end…since he is conspicuously missing from any X-men: ReGenesis promos…

Flash Review - 8/24/11

So when deciding which comic to review each week, it’s always a challenge to pick one from the pile because I usually have at least something I want to say about each one, not usually enough to write a whole review, but I feel all pent up without somewhere to get these opinions out.  Of course I could write up a blog about it, but if I wrote an article every time I had a thought or opinion then the site would be overloaded, I think.  So here’s my solution:

Welcome to Flash Review!

Each week from now on, in addition to my weekly review, I’ll also be doing a BRIEF review write-up of everything from my Pull List.  So here we go, the Flash Review from 8/24/11.

Astonishing X-men #41 – I have to be honest, this story is a bit boring for me.  I am all for mixing it up and throwing other FF villains at the X-men, but Monster Island and Mentallo? FAIL!  And the worst part is that this is supposed to be the real story and “Meanwhile” is like a side story, but its way more interesting!  Could be because I am not that into Armor, seems like a new Kitty or Jubilee…and we didn’t need one!

Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt – I didn’t read much (or almost any) of Avengers: The Initiative so I don’t know these characters too well, but if you were going to jump on board with these young heroes and get to know them: THIS IS THE SERIES!  You don’t have to know the Initiative, Young Allies or anything else to follow the story, and Sean McKeever is doing an amazing job of showing the turmoil and anguish that these neophytes are feeling as they struggle to hold their own in a war that the veterans are struggling and dying in! AMAZING TIE-IN!

The Iron Age: Omega – Well this turned out to be quite a disappointment.  I’m sorry Marvel but you don’t just throw out words like “Dark Phoenix returns” without something really good planned to back it up.  This entire time traveling mess seemed sloppy and thrown together, and Phoenix barely made any appearances in the entire thing.  The premise was flimsy and the group of heroes wasn’t drawn together by any interesting or special circumstances, Tony gathered them because he saw them on the Phantom’s monitors…but they were only on the monitors because in every alternate reality Tony called them…because they were already on the monitors.  There’s just some really haphazard time traveling and storytelling happening in this entire story.  I guess no matter how hard they try, we will never get another Dark Phoenix Saga.

New Mutants #30 – Fear Itself trudges on, but this is one of the more interesting tie-in storylines.  I have really enjoyed the Valkyrie/Hela/Moonstar business that’s been going on since Siege and love the return of Brightwind.  I don’t really think that it was necessary to get Mephisto involved though.  In an already confusing and convoluted bringing him in just to ask Magma out on a date seemed a little silly (although I always enjoy big showings of her own bad-assness”.  I DO love how seamlessly X-man has folded into the team.  He’s a great new addition to a team that has barely changed roster much in over 20 year and a much better team mate then Xi’an “I quit the team every time something else pops up” Coy Mahn.  I’m still a little unclear exactly what Dani is fighting and why, but I am intrigued enough to NOT hate yet another Fear Itself book.

Uncanny X-Force #13 – WOW.  Just...WOW.  I wasn’t sure what to expect from this return trip to the Age of Apocalypse, but it has yet to disappoint!  Seeing all these iconic versions of our favorite characters again has been thrilling!  Forget the quest for the Life Seed!  Watching Logan struggle with trying to save not just any old survivors but his best friend and the love of his life AGAIN is heart breaking.  And to watch AOA Jean/Phoenix take the choice right out from under him as she reminds him “I’m not your Jeanie…I’m his” and throws him and all the other 616 mutants through the portal because it wasn’t their fight, was painful to watch.  I am intrigued about a few things by the end of the book though: 1) How does Nightcrawler get there (since we know he does from recent teasers) if they already came back through the portal and 2) Is that really Holocaust we see at the end there!?

X-men (Vol. 3) #16 – Eh…this continues to be a lackluster and somewhat BLEH book.  Every issue seems to further prove that we don’t need ANOTHER X-men book (you know in addition to Uncanny, Astonishing, Legacy, and the upcoming Wolverine & the X-men).  Now that being said, this issue DID have some really great highlights to it.  Valeria’s “It wasn’t me…but it could have been” attitude? Amazing!  Thing and Wolverine’s exchange about Doom and Magneto? CLASSIC!!  And bringing Lee Forrester back in the mix with Magneto, Cyclops, AND Emma (aka the New Girl in Cyclops’ life)?  NOT TO BE MISSED!!  These few elements alone will keep me interested in this storyline but I still say we don’t need the X-tra X-book.

X-men Legacy #254 – This was ok.  Definitely seemed like a decent opening for what COULD be a great story, so I’ll excuse the slow moving-ness of this first issue.  Lots of set up for the next few issues here.  I would have liked to have seen more of Alex, Lorna and Rachel but again I think this was mostly setting them up for #255.  And I guess I wasn’t watching closely back when Magneto accepted Polaris as family, but it really meant a lot to me to hear him refer to her as his daughter.  I think it shows that this is more than just a standard rescue mission for him and he has more at stake.  I’m less interested in the whole civil war aspect of what’s going on and really not interested the whole Bug People part of it, but I supposed that they had to frame the rescue mission with something!  Oh and Rogue’s little group of people?  Stupid!  Not only are they basically caricatures, but Mike Carey had the audacity to pull out the Arin’nn Haelar!  I’m sorry but that is sacred and only to be used in extreme situations, not for Rogue to pull a power play.  I am sure that she could have thought of something else…  Overall this storyline shows promise and the important part is that the Starjammers make it back to earth.

The Forever Storyline - Review FF #8

Honestly where to begin?  Some may call my psychic (or just psycho) but I sort of called this last month.  After thoroughly enjoying 2 issues of Inhumans, I suspected that once we got back to the Future Foundation, the storylines would be a bit lackluster...and lo and behold!  ::sigh:: OK lets break it down...

The Bad - I typically do the good first but I'd rather get this out of the way.  This book all but requires you to know your fair share of Fantastic Four history.  I thought that with Spidey and Doom joining the group and a whole slew of misfits to focus on, that this wouldn't just be a new Fantastic Four book, but alas it is.  I just tuned back in Reed and the gang during Countdown to 3 so I don't get the backstory of Forever City, Nathaniel (last I saw him, he was an old man with a cybernetic eye and Dr. Doom's armor), or Valeria's cold demeanor, and I would think that they could give us a little more to work with.  I also just recently started to regularly collect the new Avengers books during Heroic Age, and even with them pulling out some old storylines from the vault (like Korvac and the Infinity Gems) these stories didn't require me to have read the old storylines the way that FF has.  Also, did I really just watch Dr. Doom get taken out by DIABLO?  Boo! Hiss!!  Are you for real?  First of all, not only should Doom have been expecting a double cross, but Reed flat out said that it was "statistically significant" so shouldn't everyone have been watching extra closely?  And really, when was the last time Doom got snuck up on...  And where is Ben Grimm??  I get that he's on the Avengers now, but Wolverine manages to be in all places at all times for all his books so I expect the same from the Thing, and if a choice has to be made as to where he goes, then he definitely goes to the FF before the Avengers.  At the end of the day, part of me feels like I don't even get the story enough to be disappointed in it, but I definitely am...disappointed that is...

The Good - All is not lost!  There were some gleaming moments in this dismal showing!  First of all, yeah we all know that Reed "leads" the team...just like we all know that Susan is the backbone.  When a foot needs to be put down or some needs putting in their place ::coughNathanielcough::  She's truly the strong woman behind the man and nobody best forget that!  Another printed gem was the scene with Franklin and Valeria.  Or really any scene with Franklin and Valeria.  Franklin used to be such a little goodie goodie, so its nice to see him getting his sneaky-on.  And Valeria, well shes just hilarious.  She's definitely an older woman (like her parents age) trapped in the body of a little girl and I get the biggest kick out of watching this superbrain getting super-timed out by her parents (my other favorite Valeria moment this week came in X-men (Vol. 3) #16 when catastrophe strikes and they ask if she caused it and she replies, "No! But that does sound like me."

Overall, Marvel screwed up a great book...they added a slew of new characters and then didn't use them and instead made this just a continuation of Fantastic Four (even counting the issues numbers towards this Fall's Fantastic Four #600.  Maybe they should have tried to show us Alex Power working without his siblings, or Artie and Leech worried about all their friends across the country on Utopia, but no, instead we got characters acting as wall paper while we get page after page of science babble from Reed, Nathaniel and now Doom.  I'll almost certainly be dropping this book after issue #11 and I doubt I'll be picking up Fantastic Four again until the next big event.  Unfortunately the brilliant snippets we get of the kids aren't enough to warrant $3.99 a month from me anymore.

next Big Thing: Shattered Heroes Interview with Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction

WARNING: Read the interview before you read my write-up!

Interview with Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction - at IGN

Time for Marvel's Next Big Thing - Shattered Heroes!  Much like Dark Reign and Heroic Age, this won't be one big sweeping storyline, but instead just a general tone and direction for a many (or most) or Marvel's books...but that means its JUST like Dark Reign AND Heroic Age.

Fear itself has been very exciting with a lot of action, character developments, and more then one pointless tie-in series, but its also coming off the Heroic Age where Marvel swore to us that they were done with large sweeping crossovers.  Let's also not forget the Heroic AGE only lasted a year.  It was supposed to be the new status quo for the Marvel Universe but at most it was about 12 issues in each of the Avengers books and the first 4 issues of many other books (and one Uncanny X-men special).  Personally, I was just getting really comfortable with the current teams and now it seems that anything and everything is changing...YET AGAIN.  Are we going to get a slew of new #1s also??

And there is at least a small chance that Thor will be dead by the end of Fear Itself, again, and that leaves me wondering what are we going to get in Fear Itself 7.3?  Are we getting a new God of Thunder (much like the old new Captain America and the new Ultimate Spider-man)? Or will it just be a depressing mourning issue showing the reaction of the other Asgardians?  Didn't they just make a big deal about Cap, Iron Man and Thor being back together again??? I guess people got bored with that.

Now I am very intrigued to see where Iron Man goes from here.  He, in my honest opinion, that voluntarily gave up the most.  I understand that Captain America lost his best friend, and Thor is either dead or possibly at odds with all of Asgard, but Tony had to make the conscious choice to leave his friends and comrades in the midst of a war. He also had to sacrifice his hard earned sobriety in the hopes that All-Father Odin will not only choose to NOT incinerate him on the spot but also will listen to him and help him save the planet that Odin is ready to raze...

Now if Shattered Heroes ends up just being Fear Itself 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, Battle Scars and the Fearless then I'll be ok with that.  However, if it turns into Dark Reign year of fallout and backlash from the even then I'll honestly be more then just a little disappointed.  I just don't think that every big event needs to be followed by a company reset of the status quo in order to keep it interesting.  I mean really, after only 1 year of Avengers stories, they can't possibly have exhausted all the angles from these groupings of characters, and if they think that they have then they just aren't trying hard enough.

I'm definitely going to read Shattered Heroes, and I definitely want to know what happening to everyone afterwards.  I just wondering if it needs to be a huge storyline that covers every book.  I remember years ago after Onslaught, which covered basically every Marvel book, they didn't follow it up with a huge storyline covering every book.  It led into Heroes Reborn (which only included 4 books) and everything else had an issue or 2 to just show the fallout from the storyline.  I think that this should be more like that rather then drag out a big Dark/Heroic Reign/Age.  I don't want to see the Shattered Heroes banner all the way until next Summer.
