Flash Review 10/19/11

Avengers #18 – Disappointing.  I mean really if you’re going to put on the cover “Who Will Be the Next Avengers?” then you should tell us who the next Avengers are at some point in the issue.  All we really accomplished in this issue was Steve Rogers telling us that they are getting a new lineup…which we already knew from the cover.  Way to string us along Marvel.  Epic fail.

Avengers 1959 #2 – I can’t say that this is much of a letdown since I didn’t expect much from this issue to begin with.  So far I maintain my stance of being bored by this 1950’s Nick Fury’s Avengers deal.  I am sure at the end of the series it will lead to something that happens in another book but it sure if boring getting there.

Fear Itself #7 – Its over!!  After one of the most exhaustive (and expensive) storylines in history, the Serpent has fallen and so has the Mighty Thor.  The overall pay off was well worth the wait, the story was amazing , but I do have one complaint.  The action of the story was over halfway through the book and the second half was all aftermath.  I’m sorry but I have Battle Scars, Fearless and Shattered Heroes for aftermath, I don’t need more here.  Basically this was books 7 AND 8 but because 8 was boring they made 7 double sized.  And we even still have a few more tie-ins trickling out next week!

Fear Itself: The Fearless #1 – Great issue! I’m actually really excited about this series.  I love Valkyrie and I am still intrigued by Sin (the former Skadi and current Red Skull).  I have serious doubts that this series needs to be 12 full issues but at least they are coming out every 2 weeks instead of every month so we won’t have a whole year of this ::coughChildrensCrusadecoughcough::

Fear Itself: The Home Front #7 – Speedball redeemed! And a new team that goes nowhere!  I don’t know, some of these Home Front stories were ok and some were just stupid.  I thought we were going to get a teaser about some new team book with X-23, Thunderstrike and co. at the end of the issue but no such luck.  It is good to see Robbie getting his confidence and standing back as Speedball again so the issue wasn’t a total loss.

Fear Itself: Youth if Revolt #6 – Again, I expected a teaser for a new book at the end of this but none.  So unless they are planning on surprising us with a new Initiative book in a few months, this series may have been a waste of time.  The only big thing that came out of this was that Thor Girl regained her full powers and evolved into the Designate.  I am curious to see what comes of that, and of Gravity and Firestar, but I otherwise would have liked to see more coming out of this action packed story.

Invincible Iron Man #509 – Maybe it’s just because I don’t regularly read Iron Man, but I have to be hoenst, I don’t care much about Pepper’s storyline.  “Boo hoo, I’m not a good hero”.  Well tough, not everyone needs to be a hero to be useful and productive.  Get back to running his multinational corporation, you were awesome at that!  And as far as Tony himself goes, the revelation about how he wanted to drink was kinda lame, of course you wanted to drink, you’re an alcoholic.  But as far as the entire Asgardian Forge aspect of the story goes, I loved it!  Watching him make weapons, get chummy with dwarves, and dive into a molten vat of Uru metal was hot!

Journey into Mystery #629 – Great side story to the main action of Fear Itself, even if it dragged on a bit too long.  This story totally could have been an issue or two shorter, and, with the way they rushed out some of the issues, could have even started at the same time to do it.  Even so, I enjoyed watching Young Loki and Leah take their journey into (mystery?) various hells as they get to know each other (and try to figure out just how evil (if at all) the other actually is).  One more issue of Fear Itself stuff next issue and then who knows, I may continue this series even though I don’t collect Thor.

Vengeance #4 – I’ll be completely honest, I am a little lost as to what exactly is going on in this series.  I get that it’s a younger group of heroes and a young group of villains, but they aren’t really that much younger, if at all, then a lot of other heroes and villains right?  And its fun watching Angel and Beak again but I am just not really getting the whole In-Betweener aspect of this story.  I think I’m going to have to read the whole series again from the beginning once I have all the issues.

X-Factor #226 – This really is such a great book.  What’s up with Shatterstar and Rictor?  Or Shatterstar and Longshot for that matter? Does Guido have as soul?  Why is Layla so creepy? And who the hell is BloodBath?  There is so much going on in this book at all times, and it’s awesome!  I never get tired of reading it and it never seems over done or too busy.  2 Thumbs Up!

The Curtain Falls - Review Uncanny X-men #544

And there you have it, Uncanny X-men (Vol. 1) is officially history.  Marvel has finally pulled the plug on its longest unbroken run.  Yeah Avengers, Spider-man, and Fantastic Four have been around longer but they all at one time or another (if not several times) have been rebooted or renumbered since their inception, while Uncanny X-men has gone unscathed since the 60’s (except that one period where they were cancelled, but they came right back with the same numbering at issue #94).  I have long gone on record as being VERY anti-reboot/renumbering since to me it just seems like a cheap marketing ploy and now, and now those of us who have been collecting for years will forever be missing issues #545 through #599 (since I suspect they will revert to the old numbering at #600).  But enough griping about the cancellation of it all, let’s get on with the issue.

Now, looking past the whole “final issue” deal, this was an amazing issue.  Right off the bat, we were treated to a retro page that gave me tingles when I read it.  A flashback to the first page of X-men #1 from September 1963, with Professor X calling to his X-men from his wheelchair and asking for an update as to the status of his original X-men (minus Jean of course).  And to be honest the best part of this issue was that this was the end of the nostalgic pandering.  From there we moved right into the future as we see Bobby leaving (with Domino, Psylocke and Hope staying) and we witness him and Scott say their goodbyes.  Then just before he leaves he asks Scott if he remembers when…BOOM! Splash page of the X-men’s finest and worst moments! Magneto, Juggernaut, Sauron, Blue-furred Beast, Dark Phoenix, Emma Frost as the White Queen, Storm’s Mohawk, Sinister, Apocalypse, the Brood, and Scott and Jean Grey kissing at the very center of it.  Back to Bobby and Scott, Iceman leaves Utopia with a somber farewell to his best friend.  A quick snippy word with his other “best friend” Beast and Wolverine’s plane of his own X-men leaves, and the splitting of the X-men is complete.

Framing this entire affair is a eulogy by none other than Mr. Sinister himself.  As he disintegrated and reforms his own body over and over again, with different personality changes each time, he laborious writes in a text labeled the Uncanny X-men, as though trying to finish the volume with us.  LOVED IT!  Thank god hes, back, Miss Sinister was a joke, and I almost don’t care about whatever silly explanation they have for getting rid of her completely and bringing him back.  Would it be nice to have seen his return before now? Maybe, but the important thing is that he’s back!  Hearing him write out the final chapters of this title in his various personalities was hilarious, I can’t wait to see what he does in Uncanny X-men (Vol. 2) #1.

Watching Scott take down the old photos of past team lineups was sad, but it really showed that he was serious about moving forward into the future not backtracking into the past (which is how he sees Logan).  As sad as I am to see this volume go, I am forgoing my annoyance about the reboot and I am eagerly anticipating the new series.  I think they are making a good choice by opening it with a classic villain like Sinister, as opposed to some crappy vampire storyline like they did with X-men (Vol. 3).  So far ReGenesis is off to an amazing start and it has barely even started yet!
