Flash Review - 12/7/11

Hey everyone, I am so sorry for the incredible lateness of this flash review.  I promise that between today and tomorrow I will get all caught up on my posting for the website so just keep an eye out!  And without further ado...the Flash Review for 12/7/11!

Fear Itself: The Fearless #4 – Ugh…only issue 34 and I’m already bored to death with this storyline.  Just let Fear Itself die already!  It was a great crossover (with too many tie-ins to begin with) and now it’s done.  Do we really need to have this 12 issue epilogue to it also?  I’m way more into what’s going on over in the new Defenders title.

Journey into Mystery #631 – Not too much huge action in this one but lots of setting up future storylines happening here.  I’m curious about these All-Mother(s) ruling in Odin’s stead and what their little secret is regarding Loki’s future role since they clearing seem to be planning SOMETHING.  I’m so glad Leah is still around with Lil Loki even though Hela’s gone back to Hel (yes, with one “L”).  It’s great to have a separate title like this that doesn’t require me reading the main Thor title to keep up. 

X-Factor #228 – It’s starting to become a snooze fest in here with this Blood Bath storyline.  It was really fun and cool at first but now it’s starting to wear on (like the Dark Angel Saga) a bit too long.  So after another entire issue we still are not completely clear on whether or not Jaime and Layla are really dead and ReGenesis hasn’t even hit here yet!  They have one more issue to get that all cleared up before Alex and Lorna get home to see what the kids were up to while they were gone.

X-Club #1 – Exactly what I expected it to be.  Fun story, heavy on the comedy, and little on the world-scale drama.  With Danger often busy on the Extinction Team or serving as Warden, it’s easy to forget her place on the X-Club, since she is a hyper-intelligent consciousness,  so I am glad they decided to center the limited series around her.I continue to love Kavita Rao, Dr Nemesis, and Madison Jeffries’ dynamic as the quirkiest group of scientists/geniuses that have ever worked together (not to mention Kavita’s status as token human scientist now that Moira MacTaggart seems to NOT being coming back).  Looking forward to the rest of this series in earnest.

X-men #22 – I’ll admit that this series has gotten much better since its original horrific Curse of the Mutants arc but it’s still doesn’t give just cause for this entire series to continue.  The only thing that this title gives me is a place where Storm can be shown in some sort of leadership capacity as she deserves.  I like seeing vampire Jubilee is action as part of the team, as well as double agent Psylocke.  I only hope that Ororo can keep this dark team of X-men together and sane.

Defenders Assemble! - Review Defenders #1

                And the fallout from Fear Itself continues!  The big difference this time is that it didn’t annoy the hell out of me to read it!  Since I have barely recovered from a nasty bout of Crossover Fatigue I am not really looking to keep reading about this storyline anymore then I have to.  In fact, I almost didn’t even buy this comic since there isn’t even anyone in it that I regularly read (I mean at least Secret Avengers has Beast), but after reading Marvel Point One and all the promo information that’s been pushed about this title, I felt compared compelled to at least give it a chance.  And boy am I glad I did!  I may not be 100% sold on collecting this title forever but this first issue definitely bought them a few arcs (much in the fashion that I gave FF a few chances to win me over).  On the plus side, this title DOES have a lot going for it.  Many of the original Defenders members who are returning are not quite the same as they were when they last were on the team.  Dr. Strange is no longer Sorcerer Supreme and is sleeping with graduate students;  Namor is now carrying a proud mutant flag and a torch for Emma Frost; Iron Fist has had more than one life altering event in his life; and Hulk is now…well…female and red.  Like I said, lots of changes. 

                First and foremost, my favorite character has to be Red She-Hulk!  I am not a huge Hulk fan as a rule but ever since I have been hearing about this crimson femme fatale, I have been very interested in her story.  It helps that original She-Hulk is one of my all-time favorite characters ever but I was instantly intrigued about the origins of this new hulk.  To find one that she was long time Hulk lover Betty Ross was a huge deal to me and only made her an even cooler character.  Of course liking the one character isn’t a reason to start collecting Hulk comics (especially since she isn’t really in all the issues) so her taking Hulk’s place on this brand new team book (after all, I DO love a good team book) was a dream come true.  This way I get to follow this amazing character without subscribing to a line of books where the main character doesn’t really interest me all that much. 

Another great character in this book is Nul.  As sick to death as I am of Fear Itself and its spin-offs, I was really into the characters of the Worthy and was somewhat sad to see them all evaporate at the end of Fear Itself #7.  But this book showed us two thing: first, that the Worthy aren’t completely gone and can be summoned without a host and second, all it takes to bring forth a Worthy is to shatter its hammer.  I sorta hope Valkyrie knows that over in The Fearless...  I did somewhat wonder why Dr. Strange had to be TOLD what was going on with Nul since I am sure there would have been news footage of the Bucharest attack, but this is fiction after all so a little suspension of disbelief is perfectly acceptable.

Add Wundagore Mountain and a quasi-intelligent, non-ragey Hulk guest appearance to this mix and you’ve got the makings of a great story!  There weren’t any major glaring problems in the issue worth talking about but it was only the first issues so anything can still happen.  It’s no X-men or Avengers so they don’t get a clear endless subscription but they have definitely bought themselves at least to issues 10 or 12 with stories like this.  If the writers can keep the excitement of this first issues going through every issues of this series, they will definitely have a mega hit on their hands!

My Weekly Pull List - 12/7/11

I wasn't sure I was going to grab it, but its looks just too interesting to pass up and this was a small week so I've decided to pick up Defenders #1 and see how I feel about it in the coming months.  ::sigh:: Back to Fear Itself stories...yay...  X-Factor and X-Force wrap up their pre-ReGenesis storylines with both a BloodBath and Death.  ReGenesis keeps on going in spectacular fashion with X-Club #1 and X-men #22!  And can I say how nice it is to have X-heavy weeks again??

Flash Review - 11/30/11

Angel & Faith #4 – Weeeeeeeeeird!  The best part of the Season 9 titles is that they really brought each character’s tone back to where it was at the BEST point in their shows.  Buffy is back to being very tongue in cheek, quirky and fun while Angel is back the more macabre, dark tone from its earlier seasons on television.  I kinda thought that the villains of the arc were stupid, but the story, the purpose behind the story was very clear and well received.  It wasn’t about bringing Giles back entirely, and it definitely wasn’t about two bitter ex-minions from Angel’s Twilight days.  It was about reestablishing the relationship between Angel and Faith, the slayer has can trust to always watch out for him.  I can’t wait to see where this dynamic duo goes next.

Fantastic Four #600 – I wasn’t going to buy this when it came out last week but this week was such a small pull that I decided to grab it.  Well as far as landmark, company-wide, anniversary 600th issues go, it wasn’t half bad.  This multi-story 100 page spectacular offered up everything that a Fantastic Four fan would crave…up to and including the return of beloved Johnny Storm.  I’m not really that big of a Fantastic Four fan and to me the return came too soon and too easy.  A little over a year ago they made a huge deal over a member dying, the Fantastic Four being cancelled and a new Future Foundation rising from its ashes.  Instead we got an 11 month spin off before they take back everything they did and now we’re left with both titles to collect.  Well I say thee nay!  While I know I swore I was stopping both after this month, I have decided that I like the quirky gang of miscreants in the Future Foundation.  So as long as it’s the story is about the kids I will continue to collect FF, but I will not be further collecting Fantastic Four.  I know Johnny’s back, I read how it happened, they told me everything I need to know regarding the matter and now I’m good. 

FF #12 – Expanding upon what I wrote above.  I love this group of random creatures and oddities so much more than their Fantastic adult counterparts, and lead by Valeria I can only imagine where they can go!  I am a huge fan of the original run of X-Factor so I’ve loved Artie and Leech for years, got really into Alex Powers during his time with the New Warriors (as well as recently getting into the original Power Pack series), and always had a fondness for Franklin Richards so this series has turned into a bit of a guilty pleasure for me.  I’ve even grown to like some of the unfamiliar faces like Dragon Man, the moloids, and that rascal Bentley.  I’m even a fan of Doom being such a large part of the team, something I was never really comfortable with, but one person I am not a fan of is this new Nathanial Richards character.  Now I may not regularly read Fantastic Four, but I did back in the 90’s when everyone thought Reed Richards was dead and I was a fan of the version of Nathanial Richards with the cybernetic eye from that era.  I’m not entirely clear on where this guy came from and how he’s different from the old version of Nate, but I hope he mostly keeps to the Fantastic Four title and not so much this one.

Ghost Rider #6 – See now we’re gonna have a problem.  Because I’ve been complaining about this title and its lack of interesting stories and how I don’t like Alejandra as Ghost Rider.  Now this issue rolls around and the storytelling is great!  I love the cursed village of murders and the one man who wanted to change everything.  And in the midst of loving this story, I was still so bored to tears by Alejandra.  So that just means SHE’S the problem.  I couldn’t be more disappointed by this, and I mean that.  This miserable depressing girl is just too boring to read, and I almost don’t want to be bothered.  The only reason I am continuing to collect this title is so I don’t miss it if they HAPPEN to do some story with Johnny Blaze or (god forbid) Zarathos.  But that will only last for so long Marvel, so TICK TOCK TICK TOCK, get it together on this one!

X-men: Legacy #259 – Definitely one of the better ReGenesis issues so far!  We see Ororo, Psylocke, and Emma testing both sides of the Schism a bit but only Rogue has the unique ability to literally see it from everyone perspective and make the most informed decision possible…and that’s just one choice she has to make!  I suspect that by the time next issue is over she will feel that the choice over which side to pick pales over choosing between Gambit and Magneto.  Funny enough that’s kinda the part I care the least about, especially since we already  know she picks Wolverine from the promos (sorry if you don’t read promos, but I suspect if you found this blog then you do).  More important to me is how do Havok, Polaris and Rachel come to decide to leave Scott.  I mean, Havok is his brother and Rachel calls Scott “Dad” at this point.  I realize that Alex and Lorna are going to their other “family” X-Factor but even still, what could make them leave Alex’s brother during a time like this and what could convince Rachel to leave her father.  On a lighter note, I love that Ariel is the big mystery presence! A great way to lighten up an otherwise dark and heavy issue.

Something Sinister This Way Comes - Review Uncanny X-men #2

     And the fun keep coming!  This new volume is already becoming everything that the mutant superhero team should be!  For too long I watched this book decline, odd stories, pointless team-ups and then the final straw was when they took the "flagship" status away from this book and gave it to Astonishing X-men.  From there it was a slow decline into Dark X-men nonesense, silly mutant "plagues" (that don't hold a candle to the Legacy Virus), just pointless story after pointless story as they tried to be the "mutants in the global view" book.  Well that's over with!  I don't really know what the plan is for Astonishing but this Uncanny X-men 2.0 seems to be where the mutant action is and is going to stay.  With Cyclops' new mission of proactive action to make the X-men more of a peacekeeping force, like the mutant Avengers, I think we can expect to see more of the mainstream stories occurring here (such as the teased Phoenix story) rather then getting limited and one-shot to handle major events and changes.

     So on to the new Extinction team.  WOW.  That all I can say is WOW.  First of all I am shocked that Namor is actually staying on the team.  When his book got cancelled and then I heard about Schism, I assumed his tenure with the X-men was done and I wasn't too broken up about it either.  But the longer he is there the more he feels like he belongs with the team.  His connection to Emma Frost seemed really out of left field at first but the writers have really taken the time to develop this relationship into something that might really happen and I am sure there are already people that would prefer Emma with him instead of Scott.  It's also really interesting to see Scott and Ororo on the same squad again after so long.  I went back into my old back issues and realized that Scott and Ororo haven't been on the same squad since Uncanny X-men #201.  After that he left to form X-Factor with the other originals, and when he came back they split the team into Blue and Gold squads, and from there they jsut never really made it back onto the same regular squad again.  So it will be nice to see her playing Jiminy Cricket to his Pinocchio.  And it comes as no surprise to me at all that having Hope and Magik on a regualr X-men team is amazing!  Illyana has always been such an amazing (and favorite of mine0 character but I almost felt that they always had her too bogged down in her demonic fate to explore her truly.  And in New Mutants most recent volume, she was soulless for much of that time so it was more Darkchild then Magik.  Now we get to see her really come into her own and for once we get to see her watching out for her big brother instead of the other way around.  Oh and where the hell is Emma's arm??? Has anyone been watching it??

     And how about Sinister?  This megalomaniac has come a long way since being Mr. Sinister leader of the Marauders and ordering the death of the Morlocks.  This issue explained to us exactly what he was doing in the closing chapter of the previous Uncanny X-men volume.  This new 'Sinister System" is leaps and bounds more creative and innovative then that Miss Sinister debacle.  It is also worth mentioning that Scott thinks nothing of killing these Sinisters (even when he thought that there was one lead one).  Back during Inferno, Cyclops was heartbroken when he thought he destroyed Essex with his optic blasts and he readiness to do it as many times as needed in this case is a sure showing of how far he has fallen in his moral standing.  Uh, and did everyone else see how Jugger-lossus just squeezed his head like a grape?!  YIKES!

     As I've stated in previous blogs and reviews, I wasn't really sold on splitting the X-men into two separate camps at first but after two months of this new title and the new Wolverine & the X-men I think that this new status quo could be an even better set up then the legendary Gold/Blue split.  I am still curious as to where Professor X is going to end up because he was clear that he's not staying at the school but he also hasn't been shown any sort of role yet in the new Uncanny situation either so only time will tell.  I look more and more forward to these main book every single month, thank god they are finally pulling X-men out of the rut they've been in these last few years.  I can't wait to see what the creative team has in store for us in the coming issues...is that a Celestial thumb I see baring down on Cyclops in the "Next Issue" spot...?

Flash Review - 11/23/11

Alpha Flight #6 – Not too much to say.  Fun title.  Glad the original team (plus Puck and Marrina) are back but nothing out there special about it.  I liked Northstar better with the X-men but he definitely belongs with Alpha Flight (who are miraculously the only dead people to survive Chaos War, I might add).  I’ve been wondering though if Namor even knows that Marrina is alive?  Last he saw her was as a mutated monster over Norman Osborn’s control that he had to kill…maybe a reunion is in order?  I wonder how Emma Frost would feel about that…Good series but should stay as a limited.  I had heard rumors that it was being bumped up to ongoing but not a good idea.

Annihilators: Earthfall #3 – Alright Ronan, lets pull it back a little bit.  I don’t know a lot about the Accuser’s earlier stories as a straight up villain, but I’ve really learned to love the character ever since War of Kings and his marriage to Crystal.  BUT.  Isn’t destroying the entire United States a bit much? This isn’t the first time there’s been a mass possession or infestation of some kind so why is this Kree butting his blue into Earth business.  I didn’t see anyone blowing up cities or countries when Inferno took over New York and threatened to spread.  And is it me or does his hammer now do ANYTHING it needs to do whereas it used to be mostly just a powerful hammer?  Other points, I love the kiddie Magus angle, not because its innovative (since they are doing it over in Uncanny X-men right now with Sinister) but because It’s so cute to see little purple kids run around.  Let’s just hope that this brings back Adam Warlock because that’s where I see this going.  You know, until the next event in the cosmic line.

Astonishing X-men #44 – Eh…I don’t know.  I mean it was a good story, if you don’t know anything about the characters…at all.  But come on, Storm shows up out of the blue a week early (like Ororo wouldn’t have called?) and no one bats an eye lash that shes back to the Mohawk?  The team almost threw up last time when she showed up at Logan and Mariko Yashida’s marriage and this time nothing? OK fine.  She attacks Scott (even if it wasn’t seriously) and Emma doesn’t at least give her mind a cursory scan? Hmm.  She kisses him out of nowhere and it STILL takes him a double take to realize it’s not her.  He and Emma deserve to get captured to power some weird ass city.  As I said, if I never read X-men before and didn’t know much about the characters it was a great issue, but unfortunately I have so I was a little disappointed which is a shame because this book is always top notch in my opinion.  Oh, and there were Sentinels.

Avengers Solo #2 – I’m a little lost on the main story.  It’s a bit all over the place with a lot of, what seems to me like gratuitous pointless action.  And there’s Hawkeye fighting Paste Pot Pete (oops…I mean the Trapster), and some guy is held hostage by a merc but the merc turns out to be his sister then some chick with her face bandaged.  None of it is really making sense.  What I DO like is the back-up story.  As Secret Avengers falls further and further down my list (its down with FF and Ghost Rider now), Avengers Academy just keeps getting better and better!  I love Finesse, and the more acclimated I get to the Avengers and their history the more that Hank Pym becomes my favorite Avenger (after Scarlet Witch of course).  This issue also furthered my theory that the entire Academy set-up is becoming a reformed Avengers West Coast…and now they are fighting robot versions of…THE AVENGERS WEST COAST! LOVE IT!

Secret Avengers #19 – God I am so over this book.  I really hope that when this arc is over, we jump ahead to post Fear Itself (since Steve is still wear his Super Soldier suit) and this book gets a big overhaul.  I mean I love random storylines that don’t really move the main continuity forward much but this title continues to dump dense story after dense story on us.  I am sure we are leading up to some huge showdown with the Shadow Counsel and the evil Nick Fury LMD but come on already lighten up.  And this was basically about weaponize Super Soldier Serum…in Pot form.  Yes that’s right, Pot…as in Marijuana.  The big bad guy at the end held up his stash and said “I smoked a great deal of this”.  Really Ellis?  He sounded like someone who just ate all the mushroom because he thought the police were coming.  EPIC FAIL!  The highlight of this issue was Sharon Carter screaming “al-Qaeda! al-Qaeda !” at a group of hookers.  Because that’s what should be in Avengers comics…Super Soldier Weed and hookers.

Vengeance #5 – Ok I am not afraid to say it…I have almost NO idea what’s going on in this series.  And yet I just can’t stop reading it.  It’s completely enrapturing but I still feel like I have no idea what is going on.  This new Teen Brigade is absolutely amazing and I really hope at least most of them make it through this and are seen again because Ultimate Nullifier and Ms. America Vasquez are just incredible.  I really enjoy how they are always messaging each other instead of using 3-D holographic wristwatches to communication, it’s nice to see some REAL technology at work for once.  And really, who ISN’T happy to see Beak and Angel again???  The oddest mutant (or former mutant) couple ever to be seen and they just keep on going.  I’d really like to see more of their babies.  As for the plot, who knows.  I know the In-Betweener is involved but I don’t really get why he’s a kid now.  Where exactly is Ms. America?  Hopfully next issue will clear all this up, but more than likely I will have to go back and read all 6 issues back to back to get a clear picture of what’s going on.

An Island Getaway - Review Wolverine & the X-men #2

Its official!  This new title and its KILLER creative team have won me over!  I really was dead set against this series as there just didn’t seem to be a need for it.  With the swarm of X-books out there right now I felt like Wolverine’s new school could have appropriated one of them and made it their new home (like Legacy or Astonishing).  After a wonderful first issue, the Grey School student body kicked the action into high gear, and with so much going on they even still found time to develop some of the newer characters as well as some older ones too.

First the character development side.  It’s about time that someone laid into Bobby “Frosty” Drake and told him to grow up.  Now maybe that’s not exactly what Logan said to Bobby in the ruins of the former Xavier Institute for Higher Learning but the was the jist of it.  As one of the original X-men, Iceman has a responsibility to set the bar for excellence as high as he can, but for years he’s just joked his way through one situation to the next.  He didn’t even feel the need to develop his powers to their fullest until Emma Frost did it first when she took over his body in Uncanny X-men #314.  It took her giving an embarrassingly powerful display of HIS power for him to even try.  Wolverine and Iceman’s conversation left me thinking that we should watch for him to do great things at this new school and then the army of frosted dupes (each controlled by Bobby) appeared…Multiple Iceman? Jaime Madrox is going to be furious.  And how about Oya and Broo?  LOVE IT!  It’s wonderful that a girl as jaded as Idie is can still find an attraction in one of the ugliest forms of alien that we know of in the Marvel Universe.  And it was hilarious to watch Broo (who, it hadn’t even occurred to me, we hadn’t even heard his name outloud until she said it) verbalize his thoughts as he logic-ed his way through the parts of “a crush” as he felt them and really showed that despite being a mutant Brood, there is still some residual Brood in him.  I see this being a brand new Angel and Beak scenario…you know…minus the creepy mutant bird/fly babies and trashy hut to raise them in.  If the writers can keep the emotions churning and development coming then this book will be a smash hit!

                Now the action!  They were NOT kidding with this battle!  I guess I understand they want to really grab people’s attention but DAMN.  We were given fair notice that a classic villain was going to return so I was already prepared for some sort of “wow” moment.  Then Sauron and Wendigo showed up (if you can consider state examiners mutating into them “showing up”).  I was already a little floored, as far as classic villains go they were pretty good.  Neither character gets used very often and used well even less so I was happy with the villains guest stars…and then an army of Frankenstein’s monsters appeared from inside bullets!  Ok, not really an X-men villain but definitely classic (maybe they didn’t mean a classic X-men villain specifically I thought)…and then…KRAKOA showed up.  KRAKOA??  Ok you just don’t get any more classic then Krakoa.  I mean the Island Who Walks Like a Man is basically one step down from Magneto when you consider milestone villains, and talk about out of left field.  I t was amazing!  It was a great touch for them to keep with the Deadly Genesis version of things, and not have the living biomass talk too.  Meanwhile, all the way up on a nice safe hilltop is the Hellfire Brats.  I’m really torn on them at this point.  They’ve seemed really cool up until now but they are always starting to sounds cheesy and corny with their constant “evil chatter”, for example it was funny the first time the blond girl (whose name I cannot remember for the life of me, and it isn’t mentioned in the issue) talked cutely about hitting penguins with a hammer and then it got old.  I would hate to see this new Hellfire Club go the way of the Upstarts, cool as hell right off the bat and then quickly becomes tired and lame.

                As I already admitted, I am totally sold on this title now.  All thoughts of oversaturation from X-books are gone (not that we aren’t oversaturated but I don’t mind it is what I mean) and I can’t wait until next issue.  I mean, we don’t exactly have Cyclops, Havok and Polaris to send Krakoa into space this time do we?  I am expecting a gorgeous combining of powers to whack this weed and get the school finally opened.  If I had to have one complaint it would be that we didn’t see enough Rachel or Paige, but I suspect they are going to have bigger roles over in Legacy once that title joins ReGenesis next week.  And what about the examiners??  Or am I the only one that noticed they disappeared after transforming and weren’t seen again?  Hmmm, that’ll look bad on the report…

My Weekly Pull List - 11/30/11

Now I know I was pleading for smaller weeks but this is ridiculous!  This week I bid farewell to FF since it sucks...and Ghost Rider is next on the chopping block if Alejandra doesn't get it together. I am very excited for the Legacy part of ReGenesis to start, I love me some Rachel Summers!

More ReGenesis this week, this storyline has been going amazingly, so much better then the crappy Heroic Age of last year.  Also, this week, the last issue of FF I will be collecting as well as another (probably also crappy) installment of Ghost Rider!  New Uncanny X-men, why is the world looking so "sinister"???
