Avengers #22 – Oh come on Avengers, you are really dropping the ball with this new line-up. Between experience and sheer power, this team should be able to handle almost anything that is thrown their way. Instead we get Viper seducing/tormenting Captain America (which she would never be able to do if he wasn’t tied up already) and trying to bring Spider-woman back to Hydra (which she was never really a part of to begin with), newest Avenger Quake beating on Osborne’s agent with her fists in broad daylight (as if the Avengers don’t have enough problems right now), brutal battle’s with the Red Hulk’s inner ear germs and Norman Osborne tossing the Vision like tissue paper. Not even a one panel glimpse of Protector or Storm in the entire issue, because you know they are powerless and weak and couldn’t possibly be any help, and to top the enough steaming pile off we have Barack Obama (or the shadowy implication of him) actually agreeing to try and work with Osborn. What the hell are you people doing over there!
Fear Itself: The Fearless #9 – Probably the best issue of this crappy series so far but even still the entire point of this title is lost on me. We already know the Valkyrie won’t die or even be thrown off the Avengers because she’s still appearing with the brand new line-up in Secret Avengers (unless they are going to tell us that the past few issues of that book all happen before or immediately after the Serpents attack which I really doubt). The best part of this issue was the battle with Storm which, while being amazing and epic (as is any battle where Storm really cuts loose), was a little too over done especially when Valkyrie smashed Storm in the face with a mystical hammer since, I think we can all agree, would have killed anyone who doesn’t have some sort of invulnerability. And did anyone else notice how Dani Moonstar and Emma Frost just sort of disappeared from the scene once the battle began? Because last I recall they were standing right there, and at least Dani has a flying horse that she could have followed them with. Overall still bored with the series and can’t wait until its over and I never have to see a book with the banner of “Fear Itself” ever again.
New Avengers #21 – Sigh…yeah Osborne is screwing things up over here too as Dark Reign part 2 continues….yawn. Now admittedly the Dark Avengers part of Norman’s plan is much more interesting than the HAMMER part of his plan but I think they are just over using Osborne way too much and I’m getting tired of him quickly. I will hand it to them that Ragnarok is awesome though! Watching him battle Luke Cage beats anything going on over in Avengers proper. My favorite part of this entire part of the Osborne storyline is the defamation of the Avengers rep, a trend which was started in the Avengers Annuals with Wonder Man’s attack. I’ve been reading X-men for the last 20 years and they have been vilified by the media and military for years so it’s interesting to see the Avengers take some of that heat for once. I am looking forward to the conclusion of this storyline in the next few issues whereas I just want the main Avengers portion of it to end.
Uncanny X-men #7 – OK this Tabula Rasa storyline is growing on me a bit, I wasn’t such a huge fan of it at first. I think the “Primative’s” views on humans and our language abilities are hilarious, which is good because there’s been a distinct lack of any levity in this title for a long time now. One thing I am noticing though is that Storm seems to have developed the same time-traveling/teleportation power that Wolverine gained a few years ago. How else could she be fighting new species in Tabula Rasa, hunitn Jubilee over in X-men Volume 3, and captured by Norman Osborne over in Avengers ALL AT THE SAME TIME. See this is the problem when you start putting characters in too many books at once. At least when Thing joined the Avengers, you saw him take time off from the Fantastic Four (or FF at the time). More importantly I can’t wait to see more of Magik and Jugger-lossus (or is it Coloss-ernaut) next issue. Illyana has been my favorite of the younger generation ever since I collecting X-men Series 1 trading card and found her in the deceased X-men category so having her as a member of the flagship book was a dream come true for me. The problem is that with everything else going on in the X-world, we haven’t had a chance to see much of her and her newly disturbed brother (who doesn’t seem to be handling the power of Cytorrak as well as he would have everyone else think). Here’s hoping that next issue we get lots of subterranean mayhem from the Rasputin siblings!
Venom #13.2 – OK this story isn’t quite what I expected (although I’m not quite sure WHAT I was expecting) but it’s still really awesome. I am still bored to tears with the new Ghost Rider, they clearly missed the mark with Alejandra and need to revert back to Johnny Blaze as Ghost Rider immediately. Otherwise, Flash Thompson as Venom is pretty sick, its nice to see a Venom who isn’t inherently evil and tries to control the symbiote rather than work with (or for) it. It is a little weird watching Hellstrom here being a good guy while in the same week he’s over in Fearless helping the bad guys but whatever, they are probably just plugging him wherever they can because he’ll have a new book or one-shot coming out. Either way, this isn’t a total waste of money to read this series but it’s certainly not a must have.
X-Factor #232 – BORED NOW! I’m sorry, it’s bad enough they teased us by saying that Jaime was dying and then he clearly just jumped to another dimension but do we really need multiple issues of lame ass dimension hopping to follow it up?? If this arc ends with anything besides him dying (for at least a little while) then I am going to be kind of pissed. I waited for months to see Havok and Polaris rejoin the team and we still, after several issues, only had the one splash page of them PLUS we haven’t even seen the rest of the team! Jaime isn’t SO interesting that we want to see issue after issue of just him. It would even have been better if we jumped back and forth from this world to wherever Jaime is so we at least got to see the team’s reactions to Jaime being gone and Alex and Lorna coming back. I can tell you this, I’m going to be more than a little upset if after Jaime’s storyline we go back to the team and Havok and Polaris are already all settled in as the new leaders. I want to see reactions! I want to see complaints! I want to see whatever snarky comments Monet has to make! And I want to see all this no
